On the 29th of July all the 5/6s went on an excursion to the old melbourne jail, the treasury building and the state library!
We left school at 8.40 and hopped on a train to the city. We firstly went to some park seat around a water display and had something to eat. Then we went to the treasury building and saw were the gold would have been kept when the gold rush was occuring. We also saw the first picture that was ever taken in melbourne and it is so diffrent then ahat australia looks now, no high, humungase buildings, mainly dirt and some foot paths, their was no cars just roads where the horse would walk on. We also were told about the guy that built it and how he built the place at 19 and he built another one when he was 17! We even got to go into a room that one day the queen could be sitting in and were very important desision are made and normally people are not allowed in there but we were lucky and got to all sit in the chairs! I learnt that during the gold rush the made you have a liecnce wich was one pound, but now that would equal to about $700! These were paper so they found it very hard to keep them in good condition!
After this we sat at infont of a lake and ate our lunch! Then we set off for a walk to old melbourne jail! We saw were Ned Kelly was hanged and we saw were people would have been wiped and were people would have maybe spent most of thier lives. We saw death masks of criminals. We got told stories and one of them was three year old in jail for being homeless! Hs mother was in jail and he was on his own, homeless in the streets and got taken to jail and was there for 6 moth and got out 3 months earlier for good behaviour. Sadly when the boy was 8 years old, he drank from the yarrah river and died. When people got hung it wouldnt be the police that would tie them up and push the leaver, it would be a criminal that would be getting a rawrd for it like getting paid because they would normally be very poor. They wouldnt actually see them getting hung because they would pull a curtain over. They used to say that that was the nicest way to kill someone, but it definatally was not because if they didnt get killed strait away it would be very painful becase it would probably brake thier neck. they used to judge the type of person someone was by feeling the top of thier head and finding bumps wich ment certain things. They thought that criminals had something incomen and maybe they could stop criminals in thier tracks if they knew thety were going to be a criminal. They looked at all the crimanails that had been hung and found something incommen. that they all had high bones under thier ears. they later realised that it was justwhat the rope had done to them when they had got hanged, so that theroy was proved wrong. I cant believe how small those jail cells were and how unfairly people had got treated.
After this we walked to the state library and saw ned kellys actual armour! we also saw letters he wrote!
After this it was time to head back to school, so we hoped back on a train and headed back to camberwell, were parents awaited us. I learnt alot of new things from this excursion that I didnt know before!
